Homes for use in Disasters and Developing Countries

By Sean Conroy - Posted on 26 March 2008

Building shelters for those in developing countries can be costly and time consuming. The same goes for those who have recently been displaced due to a disaster or war. There is a plan in the works to help alleviate some of these challenges.

The California Institute for Earth and Architecture have come up with a shelter that can easily be constructed just about anywhere. It is made up of common items such as: Sand Bags, Barbed Wire, and Concrete. An 800 Square foot shelter will cost about $3400, but the size and cost and easily be adjusted to fit one's needs.

The most amazing part of this shelter is how fast and easy they are to build. A group of students were able to construct one in under 10 hours, never having built one before.
