18th Century Gift Exchange Saves Pygmy Elephants from Extinction

By Sean Conroy - Posted on 25 April 2008

A Gift Exchange between 18th Century Asian rulers seems to have saved an entire line of elephants that were once thought to have been extinct.

The Elephants were originally from the Island of Java, which is now part of Indonesia. The Elephants were sent to the Island of Sulu (Now part of the Philippines) as a gift for Unknown reasons. before they were finally left on the Island of Borneo where they exist today.

These Elephants are the oldest known mammals to have been saved through relocation, even if it was done by accident.
